The key to spiritual growth is meditation upon God's Word. Jesus said that "man should not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God" (Matt. 4:4). To live by every word of God does not merely mean reading the Bible but it means to meditate and feed upon the Scripture relevant to our needs. We do not have to strain and struggle to incease our physical stature. To grow physically, we merely have to partake of the right physical food. We may not be aware of our growth initially. However, after some time, we will find that we have really grown physically. Likewise, spiritual growth is not attained through struggling or straining but through daily meditation upon God's Word. The struggle comes because we want our growth to be instant. The world wants things to be done quickly. We want to have instant tea, instant rice, instant sleeping pills, etc. Imagine a two year old boy struggling to grow a moustache. All he needs to do is to keep on eating ohysically and one day the moustache will manifest itself eithout him struggling at all. If we can take time to feed out physical bodies three times a day shouldn't we take as much time, if not more, to feed out spirits? Moreover, when we stand before our Lord Jesus one day, it will not be how much we have frown physically that counts, but it will be how we have made use of our time on earth further our spiritual growth.
